INTERPRETIVE
AGREEMENT WITH THE BLACKFEET NATION
An agreement, with the
Blackfeet Nation, to develop and interpret the fur and
robe trade era at old Fort Benton is in place.
Elders from the Blood or Kainai
tribe, the Siksika, the Northern Peigan or Pikanii, and the Southern
Piegan or Pikuni tibes recorded their oral history
and family remembrances of Fort Benton, as the first step in incorporating
the
Blackfeet Nation's interpretation. Subsequent visits have been made
by the Elder's, to view display development, and
to offer their support and encouragement.. |
CHILDREN'S HERITAGE DAY
The Fort in partnership with our parent
organization, The River & Plains Society and
the Fort Benton Elementary School, has
been pleased to host Children's Heritage Day for
the past two years. School children from
throughout Chouteau County are given a
"hands on opportunity" to learn about
the fur and robe trade era and life at Historic
Old Fort Benton. |
LAME BULL'S TREATY COMMEMORATION
The Fort was pleased to be asked by the
Blackfeet Nation to participate in their
commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the
signing of Lame Bull's Treaty. On October
16, 2005, the Chiefs of the Kainai, Blackfeet,
Siksika and Pikanii tribes, tribal spiritual
leaders, and many tribal members journeyed to
Fort Benton to participate in the days
activities. Activities included a parade
from the Grand Union Hotel to the Old Fort,
addresses by the Blackfeet Confederacy
leadership, and tours of the Fort. |
